Questions for Camper: Remi

My name is Remi.  I was a Freshman the summer of 2011 and it was my first summer at TLC.  Before I went to camp, I was so upset that I was leaving my house, but when I came to camp, I was so overjoyed to make all new friends and I had a blast.  My counselors were so special, and one even looked like the twin of my cousin, and another one was like a mom to me.  It made me feel right at home!  One of my personal interests is dancing and I love being onstage when doing it.  But if you need someone for an acting part or to sing a song on stage, then I am soooooo not the girl to do it.  I’m a true die-hard dancing queen!  When I’m not at camp, I’m a little bored, but time goes by with school, having sleepovers and hanging out with my friends.  When I really miss camp, I email my camp friends and even get together with them.  I can’t wait for the next summer of TLC!

TLC Alum hits the big screen!

David “GUGGI” Guggenheim (3rd from left) attended Timber Lake from 1986 through 1998 as a camper, kitchen staff and then as a counselor.  He’s now set to blow up this year when two movies that he scribed hit the big screen.

Married with two kids and living in New York, Guggi worked for Us Weekly for nearly 10 years, covering 2 Marathon Breakouts in the magazine, before selling his first screenplay, Safe House.  The movie, opening February 10th, is an action thriller about a CIA housekeeper (played by Ryan Reynolds) who has to transport a rogue agent (Denzel Washington) to a secure location after his safe house is attacked by mercenaries.

Teen Reunion in the Big Apple!

What’s better than spending a beautiful day in New York City? How about being surrounded by your closest friends, while spending a beautiful day in New York City! That’s what Timber Lake’s teen campers did this past weekend when they got together for our Teen Reunion in The Big Apple.

Our oldest campers had a great time sharing laughs, memories while sampling some delicious food and beverages. Mindy & Jay shared with them a little bit of what the upcoming summer has in store for them.   Other staff members who came to hang out with the Teens included Girls’ Head Counselor Janie Schwartz, Boys’ Head Counselor Steve Bocian, Girls’ Assistant Head Counselors Romy Diamond, Liz Mayo, & Jessica Jacobs, Freshman Boys Head Counselor Jason Mercado, Group Leader Max Rudnick – even Head Basketball Coach Yousseff (YOU-SEFF-A!) showed up to see everyone!

5 Questions for Camper: Julia

My name is Julia S. I am 10 years old and I live in Norwood, NJ.  I live with my mom and dad and my younger brother Brandon who will be going to TLC for the first time in summer 2013.  I just finished my first summer at TLC this past summer (2011) and I just can’t wait for summer to begin!  This fall I tried out for an AAU basketball team and made it! I have been playing basketball 3 to 4 times a week.  As soon as AAU ends, I will be playing travel basketball and then AAU basketball again in the spring.

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The friends that I have made.

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
When my friend Morgan and I, and Hilary (a counselor) threw a bucket of water on my bunk counselor, Carla.  We took her by surprise and she never knew what was coming!

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
Boating with Hilary (the counselor) every Saturday and hanging out with my friend Sydney.

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
My Second Home

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
Getting off the camp bus and seeing all my friends back at camp – that specific moment, and getting to reconnect with them.  I now know how it feels to “live 10 months for 2.” I can’t wait for summer 2012!!!

Spotlight on Staff: Ethan

My name is Ethan, I’m seventeen years old, and I’m from Long Island, New York.  I first came to Timber Lake Camp when I was just eight years old as a camper in the freshmen division. I was a camper for nine summers, and this past summer I was a Junior Counselor. As a JC, I had the responsibility of being a counselor for the Cadet Boys, who ranged in ages from 9 yrs old to 11 yrs old. I really loved being their counselor, as the boys quickly became my good friends. In addition to my JC responsibilities, I also worked with Robbie Gothelf and Steve Bocian in helping to coordinate and organize events and tournaments throughout the summer.

Remembering Necia Marko

Without question, an era came to an end at Timber Lake with the passing of long-time Director of Fine Arts, Necia Marko, who died on Thursday, the 29th of December.  Although unable to return to camp last summer, Necia spent 43 summers at Timber Lake, missing only one other due to the birth of her fourth son, Ari.  All four of her sons grew up at camp and two of her grandchildren as well.  She came to Timber Lake in 1967 as the sister of its Director and co-founder, Sy Lebenger.  It wasn’t long before she became a presence in her own right.

Necia was Timber Lake’s Grand Diva.  She was not only proficient in the fine arts – of which she could do them all – but she was a work of fine art herself.  Expressive, bold, flamboyant, dynamic, creative and entertaining, she was not easy to miss, but will be much missed by all who came to know her.

TLC Brings Holiday Cheer to Many Deserving Children

This holiday season, the TLC Family of Camps have come together to help out families in need with the Boys and Girls Club of Glen Cove by collecting toys and other small gifts for their Club Bucks program.

During the holiday season, the Club Bucks program is offered to the club’s children as an incentive program. Here, they earn “Club Bucks” for completing various tasks and doing good deeds, such as helping a staff person, getting an A on a test, doing all their homework, helping another friend, participate in an educational activity, etc.  At the end of the program, each child has the opportunity to “shop” in the Holiday Store to purchase gifts and toys for their siblings or other family members.  Some of the items collected were: stuffed animals, bracelets, gloves, socks, t-shirts and various children’s toys. The goal of the program is to convey the importance of “giving” during this holiday season – giving of their time, effort and service – and giving of gifts to loved ones.

Our day school, North Shore Day School, also led a food drive to help support LI Cares, a hunger action organization which distributed the canned goods we collected to local shelters and families in need.

Timber Lake Camp is proud to support the Boys and Girls Club & LI Cares during this season of giving and everyone here at camp wishes you a wonderful holiday and a very happy New Year!

Bringing Camp Energy to Local School

The TLC Family of Camps have been proud participants of the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island for the past 5 years.  Dedicated to our camp organization’s mission of building self-esteem and self-confidence, more than 15 members of our full-time team travel to the Gribben Elementary School in Glen Cove twice a month to run programs for “at-risk” children.

This past week, students got to make a holiday garland of wishes, where they got to write their wishes for the New Year on snowflakes, candy canes and gingerbread men.  Whether it’s teaching a cooking class,  running team-building games, or just spending quality one-on-one time with the ‘mentees’, every mentoring program is intentionally designed to inject some “camp” energy into our local elementary school.

5 Questions for Camper: Jeremy

Hi. My name is Jeremy and I live in Jericho, New York. This summer was my first summer at Timber Lake and it was my best summer experience EVER!  I like to play soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. I also play the piano and the trumpet. I have both an older brother and an older sister who both go to Timber Lake too. I loved having them there with me. I enjoy school, but now I look forward to the summer when I can go back to camp!

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The #1 thing I love about camp is that I get to make new friends.

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
The funniest thing that happened to me at Timber Lake was towards the end of the summer, when I knew everybody’s name, I mixed up the names of 2 people in my bunk and called them by their wrong names in front of everybody. What was I thinking?!  We were all laughing, it was really funny!!!

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
My favorite memory from last summer was fake-out. (It’s when you think Breakout is going to happen, but then you realize that the camp tricked you and Breakout hasn’t happened yet – That’s why we call it “Fake-Out”.)

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
Friends, fun, sweaty

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
Two things: First, I’m looking forward to going back to the boating lake so I can swim in the water and then I’ll go kneeboarding on the waterskiing lake!  It’s so much fun!  Second, I can’t wait to go back and go hiking to the North Dome. It is a long hike but it is worth it. There is an amazing view of camp and everybody looks so tiny!!!

The Art of TLC

For thousands of years, art has been a way for artists to capture a moment in time, expressing thoughts and feelings.  From the days of Picasso, Michelangelo and Da Vinci, art has certainly changed over the years.

One might ask why is Timber Lake blogging about Da Vinci? Well, over the last 50 years, TLC has seen some incredible artists.  From the legendary Necia Marko and Jimmy Charmatz up to the more recent Sokol sisters (Peri & Emily) and Nyla Brittle, there have been many artists that have graced TLC with their presence over the years.

There are so many different ways for our TLC artists to express their artistic creativity – we have each team’s Olympic plaques hanging in the canteen, the individual bunk plaques which are showcased in the Boys’ and Girls’ HCs and bunks, and of course the Marathon plaques in the Dining Hall, and the Marathon Murals which are prominently displayed in the Rec Hall, and Timber Dome.

We wanted to give all of this tremendous artwork a chance to shine and be seen outside of the camp season, so each week we’ll be posting artwork from a different year at camp on our Facebook Page!  Make sure you check out the weekly posts and tag yourself & your friends on your teams and in your bunks!
