Timber Lake Summer Camp Directors

JAY JACOBS arrived at Timber Lake in 1967 as a camper, and worked his way up from counselor to head counselor before becoming owner/director in 1980. Highly regarded in the camping industry for his innovative ideas, he was appointed by the Governor to serve on the NY State Camp Health and Safety Council. Jay has served as President of the NY Section of the American Camp Association, Past President of NY State Camp Directors' Association, and Chairman of Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge, a program which provides camping experiences for inner city kids at a host of not-for-profit camps. In 2001, Jay founded and currently serves as chair of Heal the Children, a program of the American Camping Association that provides free camperships to the children of victims of the 9/11 tragedy. His first love, however, is the time he spends every summer with his campers.

MINDY JACOBS was also a camper and then a staff member at Timber Lake, and became director of our Girls' Campus in 1982. She is the person who gets to hear problems both big and small and help solve them. Her top priority is to help all girls feel comfortable at Timber Lake and to make sure parents know their children are safe and secure in every way at camp.  During the off-season, Mindy works with new families to ensure that the transition to sleepaway camp is a smooth one.

Meet Our Associate Directors

Janie Schwartz has been in camping since 1980. She is a full time Associate Director during the winter months and is involved in staff recruitment, program development and is a constant source of information for all our Timber Lake families. During the summer, Janie works as our Girls’ Head Counselor, overseeing all of the campers and counselors on Girls’ Side.

Steve Bocian has been the boys' head counselor at Timber Lake for over 25 years. Steve shows tremendous enthusiasm and passion in his job. He is always looking to improve the activities for the boys, especially the sports instruction and sports leagues. Over the winter months Steve works on the daily program and keeps in contact with counselors, parents, and campers. When he is not working at Timber Lake, Steve is the math chairman at East Meadow High School on Long Island. He is also a long time member of the American Camp Association.

Our Staff

The key to a great summer camp is the quality of its staff. At Timber Lake, we take pride in our commitment to recruiting, training and keeping the highest quality staff in the camping profession. Many of our head staff members have been with us for more than ten years. With a 1:2 staff to camper ratio, we work to ensure the best possible care, instruction and supervision for our campers.

Timber Lake's staff salaries are the highest in the industry, ensuring a wide pool of quality applicants (college sophomores start at a $2,250 base). Our full-year training program employs the services of top psychologists and experts in the child development field. During our summer orientation, counselors undergo intense training sessions and are educated on each camper’s individual needs.

A summer bonus incentive program rewards quality performance three times during the summer and provides counselors the opportunity to earn a maximum of $500 above their contracted salary.
