TLC’s Posse Kix Girls!

Who knew that one square dancing activity at Timber Lake would create the namesake that would forever bond the friendships between 6 former Timber Lake Campers for the rest of their lives?  This is such a unique story on the one hand, and yet, just another example of the types of friendships and ever-lasting bonds that are created spending summers at TLC.

The name “Posse Kix” didn’t emerge until the girls were second year Teens.  It was actually their last summer as campers, and by that time, they were all attached at the hip and had decided they should have a name for themselves.  The name was taken from a favorite activity here at camp – Square Dancing! One of the calls was “All 8 circulate…” Somewhere along the line all 6 girls began shouting in unison “All 6 Posse Kix…” And thus, The Posse Kix was officially named for campers Melissa, Melanie, Bailey, Kamber, Jill and Elissa.

The Posse Kix spent several summers at camp, beginning back in 1988 starting at the ages of 11 and 12 yrs old.  Throughout their years at TLC as a group, they would always stay in touch and see each other as much as possible outside of camp and the official camp reunions. Like many of our current campers, they had their own mini reunions.  Once they started driving, they saw each other more and more.

By the time the girls were college-bound, their bond couldn’t be broken!  The majority of the posse went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where they were roommates at one point or another, and a few of them even studied abroad together!  Those that didn’t go to UW were reunited in NYC after college!

When we caught up with one the Posse girls Melissa, she told us:

“TLC is legitimately the best place on earth. Aside from meeting my best friends in the world there, TLC is a place that means more to me than I could possibly articulate. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, if I think of TLC, my mood will immediately change. It brings a joy and excitement, a smile and a tear to me, all at the same time. It changed my life forever in the best possible way and definitely helped shape me into the person I am today.

My TLC Posse Kix girls have been a constant force in my life for well over 20 years. They have been there for everything – all the good, the bad, the milestones, and the regular everyday.  They have taught me what it means to be a friend and I think we make each other stronger.  They are my best friends and my sisters. We have a bond that although it is hard to articulate, nevertheless it is one that is clear to see by everyone who’s around us.”
